COMMUNITY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT

Objective #3: To end malnutrition in the Kravan and Sra Srang school areas

3.1. School Gardening Development

To provide source of food supplies for the school children at Kravan and Srah Srang School, the vegetable gardens have been developed. Three community gardeners were hired and trained to grow vegetables.  They produce a variety of vegetables in the two different schools. The school gardens are free of pesticide and chemical fertilizer. They employ composting and  mixing with cow manure to enrich the soil. The vegetables from the gardens are not always sufficient to supply nutritious food for over 400 school children daily, so we were also encourage the community to grow more vegetables to supply to the school.

3.2. Food Feeding Program for Community, PInfants and School Children:

Most of the poor children in this community come to school with an empty stomach and their physical and mental growth is thus very limited. Growth as related to age is always a complicated process. They naturally come to school with less interest in learning if they are always hungry. To improve the health of these children, nutritious food has been provided daily to over four hundred infants and school children. The project has hired and trained three cooks from the community to work on this program. The cooks have learned how to cook nutritious food from the children hospital staff. They always ensure that the food is cooked in a manner which is safe and clean. At present there are over 400 school children and 70 pre-school children under the care program.

3.3. Clean Water Accessibility for the Community Children

The project has also been working collaboratively with the NGOs - Water4Life and Every Child Has the Right to Clean Water organisations to provide bio-sand and UV high tech water filters to school and pre-school children. The filters for purifying water have been provided to them for daily drinking with hygiene. All the students and teachers are happy to enjoy this clean water.

3.4. Primary Health Care Education for School Children

A. Hygiene, Sanitation & Health Care Education and Practice

The knowledge and practice of hygiene and sanitation in the community are very limited. Most people do not understand that it relates to their health. Now all the school children learn and practice how to stay clean. It is noticeable that some of the children have improved their habits regarding hygiene and sanitation. It is evident that they are now have a consistent practice of helping to keep the school clean and washing their hands. We frequently see them helping to clean up the school yard. At the dining house the children always wash their hands with soap before and after their meals. They have also learned to clean the plates before and after food. In the last year there have only been a few children who have been absent from school because of sickness compared to the previous years. The project has also expanded its activities to provide education to the local community through adult literacy training sessions and cooking demonstrations. We have instructed the pre - school children in the target project to clean their hands and body. They practice this every day. We always ensure that the pre-school children are clean when they come to eat.

B. Monitoring Children’s Growth

To ensure that children’s health improves, the project has also monitored their growth. The project has been conducting this assessment by weight and height measurement every three months. When we find any child growing slowly they are referred to the doctor. So far only a few have been referred to the hospital.

C. School Children’s Medical Care & Education

Over 1000 children at both schools of Kravan and Srah Srang have received dental and eye care. Some children were offered reading glasses to improve their sight. The teams from Angkor Hospital for Children have been collaboratively working with this program. The CB team has also come to teach the teachers and the children regarding clean water topics.
